Think You Can’t? Grab the Sword and Fight

Whenever I think I’m not ready to do something – anything – I think about my husband. He’s totally blind, and continues to amazing me every day. That’s because Joe is not afraid to try new things, albeit sometimes crazy things.

This week, while perusing old YouTube videos we’d uploaded, I found the one of him swordfighting a martial arts expert. It was at Janicon ’07 in Jacksonville, FL. When Joe first talked to a vendor about wanting to hop in the makeshift arena, the guy asked, “How would you know what’s coming?” Then, he thought a moment and said, “Give me a minute, we’ll set something up for you.” They wound up attaching a Hello Kitty bell at the end of his opponents sword.

Take a look at the fight. Not bad for a first-timer, eh?

For those unfamiliar with the name one guy shouted during one of the rounds, Zatoichi is a famous character in a long-running Japanese series of films and television shows. He’s a blind masseur and swordmaster.

The next time you think you’re not ready to try something, think about those who dare to work around real obstacles. You don’t have to be great the first time out – you just have to give it a shot.
